After a lull in the incidents of gangsters trying to take over liquor stores, last week the city of Gurgaon witnessed a major shooting incident by the followers of a gangster, leaving one person dead.
According to the police, Lepin Nehra, 21, brother of imprisoned gangster Pawan Nehra, allegedly contacted the owners of Discovery Wine Shop in Manesar and threatened him to transfer the necklace to his father. When it didn’t work, Lépine allegedly ordered his henchmen to open fire in the store – which went awry when they ended up killing one customer and wounding two others. The police later arrested Libbin’s father, Dayaram, in connection with the case. Police said Lépine is in Canada and may have links with gangster Goldie Brar.
According to DCP (Crime) Vijay Partap, “Shooting incidents have decreased but such threatening calls have not been reported to us, like in the Manesar case. There may be extortion calls, but we have not found direct presence of such gangs in the liquor business in Gurgaon.” Except they were trying to get into this.”
Gurgaon, which is the highest revenue collector from liquor trade in the state, witnessed imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi trying to infiltrate him for a long time. Since 2014, Bishnoi has invested in liquor contracts. It was stated in the minutes of his interrogation that he had threatened several liquor dealers to leave him contracts in Rajasthan and Punjab.
In June 2020, Bishnoi men opened fire on a liquor baron’s house in Chandigarh for blackmailing and threatening him. Later, in Chandigarh again, they opened fire on a liquor store owner, “so that he would not fill more nominations for liquor contracts,” the interrogation report says.
Pataudi and Manesar have also seen several such cases of gangsters trying to control the liquor trade.
DCP Partap said people seem to think liquor is a high cash flow business. They need money to carry out their activities. Apart from extortion, they need an easy business to operate. However, after the arrest of 19 suspects in the case of the murder of the Thakran brothers, these incidents have decreased dramatically. Some names have appeared in the Manesar shooting case and we will arrest them soon.”
In February 2022, liquor dealers Paramjit and Surjit Thakran were shot dead in Pataudi. A month later, the police arrested the mastermind of the crime, gangster Ajay Gildar.
Police said Gildar had plotted the murder to prove his supremacy in the liquor trade. At the time, in a statement, Delhi Police said the victims were found to be close associates of imprisoned gangster Kushal Chaudhary, and had a rivalry with Gildar. Gurgaon Police said the case is still under investigation.
Last April, another shooting case was reported in the area – two men shot at the house of Pataudi Municipal Committee Chairman Chanderbhan Segal. In his complaint, Sehgal alleged that he received a call from Goldy demanding 50% of his contract and that all sales be made in Jaildar’s name. However, the police said that Sahgal had nothing to do with the gangsters. “The shooting and call was to blackmail Sehgal and divert his contract,” said Harinder Kumar ACP (Patodi).
The DCP said all of the big names involved in the business are now in jail. Most of the defenders of the two rival gangs, including Kaushal Chaudhary and Gildar, are behind bars. We have directed the Bhondsi Jail Superintendent to ensure that there are no gang encounters…”.
