The International Institute of Destruction also predicted that heavy to very heavy rains are likely to hit eastern, central and parts of northwestern India during the next five days.

Despite the delay, the monsoon is likely to hit Maharashtra soon, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and adjoining districts of Thane and Palghar, for Monday and Tuesday (26-27 June) indicating frequent bouts of the rain.

Some parts of Mumbai experienced pre-monsoon rains on Saturday morning, bringing cooler temperatures in the city. The intensity of the rains will reportedly increase gradually over the next four to five days.

The monsoon is progressing at a good pace now after initial delays and has reached some parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Northwest Bay of Bengal, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, rains continued to fall in Assam, exacerbating the flood situation there. The death toll due to floods rose to two on Friday and more than 4.88 thousand people suffer from the flood across 16 districts of Assam. The Meteorological Agency issued a “yellow” alert for the next two days and also forecast heavy rain in many areas of the state.

IMD forecast for the next five days:

Northeast India and its adjacent east: According to the latest IMD bulletin, light to moderate rain with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over the next five days in the region.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Odisha until June 26. Isolated heavy rains are also likely over Assam and Meghalaya on June 26 and 27, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram until June 27; West Bengal, sub-Himalayas and Sikkim on June 26, and Odisha on the 27th of June and Jharkhand on the 25th and 26th of June.”

Northwest India: Light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rain with scattered thunderstorms and lightning expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh until June 27 and over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and eastern Rajasthan from June 25 to 27.

Heavy to very heavy rains over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh until June 27 and isolated heavy rains over Uttar Pradesh until June 26 are also very likely; Over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and eastern Rajasthan from June 25-27.

Central India: IMD said light to moderate scattered somewhat to widespread precipitation with heavy to very heavy precipitation and thunderstorms and lightning very likely over the region (Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha) for the next five days.

“It is very likely that isolated heavy rains will hit Chhattisgarh on June 24,” the agency said.

South India: Light to moderate, scattered to somewhat widespread with scattered thundershowers and very likely lightning over the area over the next five days.

“Heavy to very heavy rains are also likely over coastal Karnataka until June 27; over the coast of Andhra Pradesh today; Telangana until Sunday; Kerala and Mahe from June 25 to 27. Isolated heavy rains are also likely over inland Karnataka on both days.” June 26 and 27″.

West India: Light to moderate, somewhat scattered to widespread precipitation with heavy to heavy precipitation, thunderstorms and lightning very likely over Konkan and Goa through June 27.

Light to moderate rain, scattered to somewhat widespread with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is also very likely over Madhya Maharashtra and Maratwada until June 27 and over Gujarat region on June 26 and 27.

Isolated heavy rains are also likely over northern Madhya Maharashtra from June 25-27 and over the Gujarat region on June 27.
