In another incident of arson targeting an elected representative in Manipur, a private temple belonging to the Minister of Public Health, Engineering and Consumer Affairs L Susendru Mitti was set ablaze in Imphal on Friday night.
This attack took place the night before a scheduled meeting of all parties in Delhi chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation in Manipur.
The accident occurred at around 9:30 pm on Friday in Khoray in Imphal East. A mob set fire to the temple of Sosendru Mete and the security forces used tear gas to disperse the mob.
Over the past month, the residences of several elected representatives have been attacked by angry mobs in the Imphal Valley. These include the Union MoS External Affairs Residences Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Minister of State Nimsha Kebjan, Manipur Minister for Persons with Disabilities Govindas Kunthugam, Uripok MLA Raghumani Singh, Sugnoo MLA K Ranjit Singh and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA S Kebi Devi.
The incident occurred on Friday night even as shootings continued to be reported from areas bordering the Meitei-dominated valley and Kuki-dominated hills such as Urangpat and Gwaltabi.
