The meeting comes weeks after the Shah visited the violence-stricken country for four days and met a group of people in his bid to restore peace to the region.
Leaders of various political parties including Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Trinamool Congress, left parties and others are taking part in an all-party meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the prevailing situation in Manipur on Saturday.
Shah called the meeting to assess the situation in the violence-hit state. BJP National President JP Nada and Chief Minister of Meghalaya Konrad K.
The meeting comes weeks after Shah visited Manipur for four days and met a group of people in his efforts to restore peace to the state.
Opposition parties criticized the BJP-led government for its handling of the situation as the violence did not stop even after 50 days.
Nearly 120 people have been killed and more than 3,000 injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3.
Former Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibubi Singh is representing the Congress. The Big Old Party has been asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi since June 10 to call an all-party meeting in Manipur to broker peace in the state.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet that 52 days after the burning of Manipur began, the Home Minister finally saw fit to call an all-party meeting on the situation today.
This meeting should have been chaired by the Prime Minister, who has been silent all this time. It should have been held at Imphal as a sign of national anguish. Ramesh said in a tweet on Twitter earlier today that the BJP has failed miserably the people of Manipur.
“However, the man who brought Manipur back to the path of peace and development as Prime Minister for three terms between 2002 and 2017, Okram Ibubi Singh Ji, will represent Congress in His Majesty’s meeting. He must be heard with all seriousness given his vast experience and deep knowledge.”
