The man allegedly said that he had a lot of cash with him and because of that customs detained him and needed to pay Rs 8.78 lakh for his release

Police said Saturday that in a wire fraud case, a 75-year-old woman from Mumbai was allegedly cheated of 12.63 lakh rupees by a man who proposed marriage to her after contacting her on social media.

Two men in their 20s from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, were arrested by the Mumbai Police in connection with the crime on June 21 and were brought to the city on Friday, an official of Matunga Police said.

The official said that one of the defendants sent the woman a friend request on social media in November last year by impersonating a resident of Germany and then gained her trust and offered it to her.

He said the accused told the woman that he had sent her a package, which was seized by the customs department at the airport, and she would have to pay 3.85 lakh rupees for its release, he said.

The victim transferred the money to a bank account. Eight days later, the official said, the accused called her claiming that he had flown in from London and was at Delhi airport.

The man allegedly said he had a lot of cash with him and because of that customs detained him and needed to pay Rs 8.78 lakh for his release, he said.

The official said the woman then transferred the amount to different bank accounts provided by the accused.

The woman soon realized she had been deceived and lodged a complaint with the police, who arrested the accused based on technical input, he said.

The official said that the police seized mobile phones, debit cards of various banks, check books and other items from the arrested suspects.

He added that a case has been registered under Section 420 (Fraud) and related provisions of Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act in this regard.
