LeBron James called Victor Wimpanyama an “alien” for his unprecedented combination of size, mobility, versatility and skill. He has not played a single minute in the NBA but everyone is sure that he will become one of the greats of the game.
On The Dan Patrick Show, former NBA player Jamal Crawford was asked how the San Antonio Spurs could benefit from a Wimpy. Here’s what the current TNT analyst had to say:
“He (Wimbaniyama) is kind of defining (how he will be used). Is he ready to go to the perimeter? Is he ready to play outfield? Is he ready to carry the ball on pick-and-roll?
•
“He’s very unique with that skill set, it’s about which of them get up first in the pros because it’s going to be a little bit different for sure.”
The San Antonio Spurs are fifth in field goal efficiency and three-point shooting. They had the second worst offensive rating with 109.7. Only the Charlotte Hornets, who didn’t have a LaMelo ball for most of the season, were worse with a 108.4 ORTG.
San Antonio didn’t just struggle scoring buckets. They were also terrifying on defense as they couldn’t seem to stop opponents racking up points. Spurs last died in the defensive rating with a score of 119.6. Despite having two above-average defenders in Jeremy Suchan and Devin Vassell, Tottenham were a sieve on defence.
Victor Wimpanyama should quickly improve the San Antonio Spurs on both ends of the earth. Head coach and President of Basketball Operations Gregg Popovich is expected to bring in veteran help to ease the French phenomenon into the NBA.
The #1 pick from the draft told the media that he preferred playing the power forward position and playing center side. Zak Collins, Jim Birch and Charles Bassey are Tottenham’s current centre-men. Tottenham are in a great position to get free agents to support different areas across the rotation.
No matter how Popovic uses Victor Wimpanyama, the San Antonio Spurs should play a lot better than last season.
The San Antonio Spurs could be the perfect landing spot for Victor Wimpanyama
The San Antonio Spurs know how to build championship teams. It has been the gold standard for must-follow franchises for more than two decades.
Tottenham has the experience of developing and maximizing two of the best senior players to play the game. San Antonio drafted and helped David Robinson and Tim Duncan win multiple championships.
Jamal Crawford said this about the team that drafted Victor Wimpanyama:
“I’m not sure if he can go anywhere better than San Antonio. Bob (Popovich) is the man. Having Duncan, Manu (Ginobili), Tony (Parker), David Robinson and all those great guys. I’m sure they have a great system to develop him.”
After being officially named the Spur, Wembanyama repeatedly declared his love for the team and how he couldn’t wait to represent the city. It seems that the spurs and the rookie are made for each other.
