The Indian Navy has successfully conducted a navigation assessment at Yamuna in the capital city, by using its work boat to travel 11 kilometers from Signature Bridge to Wabel Itu early Saturday morning, Delhi LG House said in a statement.

The boat was brought to the capital by maritime authorities at the initiative of LG Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has been monitoring the river’s rejuvenation as the chair of the NGT-appointed High Level Committee (HLC), officials said.

LG House said in a statement that such experiments were planned and contemplated earlier, but could never be finished due to various problems associated with the river such as lack of required depth, floating debris, and unsanitary bank conditions.

The boat, which is 11 meters long, cruises at a speed of 14 knots and has a capacity of 35 passengers. It was brought in by road from Kochi on June 3 and, according to officials, docked at Signature Bridge pier.

According to officials, the ship was seized after Saxena conceived of using the Yamuna, over limited distances, as a means of transportation with boats sailing on it.

Officials said this was followed by a detailed hydrological survey by a special marine team from Karwar and Dehradun, which revealed that in some areas, the depth of the river was less than the required 1.7 metres.

“Subsequently, locally available amphibious dewatering equipment was deployed to carry out dewatering of the identified spots and a channel approximately 30 meters wide was constructed by June 20,” adding that this channel was “given further appropriate finishing” by June 22.

According to officials, the trial run was initially planned only on the 3-kilometre stretch between Signature Bridge and the Boat Club. They added that since conditions were suitable even then, it was decided to move her to the ITO Barrage, where she is now moored in a private dock.
