Indian government sources say the Russians will unite behind President Vladimir Putin, whose popularity as a leader in the country may grow, as people will see the Wagner Group’s action as a “threat” to Russia.
As Indian government sources note, the insurrection of the Wagner Group, the alleged militia in Russia that has threatened Vladimir Putin, will only serve to further consolidate the president’s grip, citing a threat to the country’s unity.
They feel that Russians will unite behind Putin, whose popularity as a leader in the country may grow as people will view the Wagner Group’s work as a “threat” to Russia.
Sources further reveal that the West and the media may want to create a narrative about the rebellion led by Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, but that “Putin may become stronger after that.” “The head of the Wagner Group may be flagged as a rebel and his act may be considered treason.”
Prigozhin, who has agreed to de-escalate the situation, is, according to the office of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, acting “too big for his shoes,” and the current problem is between a private military contractor and the Russian military, Indian government sources said.
The sources said that Moscow has been “completely calm” since the Wagner affair broke out.
Prigozhin’s forces, which fought the bloodiest battle in Ukraine, on Saturday invaded Russia’s Southern Military District in Rostov “without firing a shot”.
Rostov has played a major role in operations in Ukraine since 2014 when Russia started the separatist border war in the Donbass region. The city’s importance as a military center has doubled since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
How did the rebellion break out?
Prigozhin posted a video on Friday saying he was escalating his dispute with senior Russian military officers, and rejecting Putin’s justification for invading Ukraine for the first time.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) opened a criminal case against Prigozhin, declaring that “the 62-year-old advocated armed rebellion against the state,” according to Al Jazeera.
On June 24, Prigozhin said his men had crossed the border from Ukraine into Russia, and were ready to confront the Russian army. Later, Wagner fighters entered Rostov-on-Don, according to the audio recording that Prigozhin posted on Telegram. He announced that his troops had captured the army headquarters in Rostov without “a single shot fight”.
Putin, in a televised speech, accused Prigozhin of “treason” and a “stab in the back”.
RIA reported that Putin is signing a law allowing 30-day detention for violating martial law in places where it was imposed.
After the Belarusian president brokers a deal with Prigozhin, the Wagner fighters evacuate the Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.
