A senior officer said that on a tip-off, members of the Assam Police Special Task Force along with Kamrup Police chased a vehicle with two alleged traffickers on board and arrested them.

Police said two people from Manipur were arrested in Assam on Sunday after drugs worth Rs 18 crore were seized from possession in Guwahati and neighboring Kamrup district.

STF Deputy Inspector General Partha Sarathy Mahanta said police personnel were deployed after receiving information that a Manipur-based group would be transporting drugs across Assam.

Early Sunday, specific information was received that the group was on its way in a luxury car to deliver the contraband.

Accordingly, the vehicle was tracked and a team of STF with Kamrup District Police chased the team. In order to escape from the police nets, the hawkers tried to flee the place. In the process, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it fell about 100 feet down Haju’s Bua Makkah hill.”

He said that the police team arrested the two individuals, both from Manipur and conducted a thorough search of the overturned vehicle.

Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Twitter, “Early this morning, @KamrupPolice arrested two drug peddlers, nationals of a neighboring country, who were involved in drug distribution in Assam. They were found to have 2.2 kg of heroin hidden in cans.” And bags of soap. Kudos to Assampolice for their outstanding efforts in combating drug trafficking.”

The search for the damaged car yielded 100 boxes of heroin, weighing 1.3 kilograms. A further search of their rented home in Jalukpari, Guwahati city, resulted in the recovery of another 65 packages of heroin weighing 900 grams.”

He added that an investigation is underway to find out who else is connected to the network.
