It was reported that Manchester United turned down the opportunity to sign Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic and is now open to a move to Lyon.

According to L’Equipe, Ligue 1 side are keen to sign Pulisic who they believe would cost around (€20m) £17.2m. Why John The owners are American and have reportedly contacted the US captain about the move.

Both Manchester United and Newcastle United have reportedly been contacted by Pulisic’s representatives. However, they are not interested in the Americans and have other goals in their sights.

Pulisic has struggled at Chelsea since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 for £58m. He wasn’t given the amount of game time he would have expected when he came on as a substitute for the match as Eden Hazard.

The 24-year-old started just 10 of 30 matches across competitions last season. He managed one goal and two assists and fell down the Stamford Bridge striker’s pecking order.

Pulisic is among several first-team players for Chelsea who appear to be on sale this summer. Reportedly, Lyon has made the USA captain a priority signing, and is among the frontrunners to secure his signature.

It was reported last summer that Manchester United were interested in a potential loan deal for Pulisic. However, the striker chose to stay at Stamford Bridge but his lack of first team opportunities continued.

While a move to Manchester United seems unlikely this summer, Pulisic has admitted in the past that he was a fan when he was younger. He told ESPN in 2017:

“I was a big Manchester United fan when I was younger.”

The Chelsea winger then revealed that he had been enjoying watching the Red Devils legend, Wayne Rooney. he added:

“I loved watching (Wayne) Rooney. However, I wouldn’t say I’m a similar player.”

Rooney became the Old Trafford champion during 13 seasons with the Premier League champions 13 times. He is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 253 goals in 559 appearances.

The former England and United captain won five Premier League titles, often at Chelsea’s expense. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 2008.

Rooney is considered one of the greatest England players ever and has also been very prolific with his national team. The current DC United manager has scored 53 goals in 120 caps for the Three Lions.

The iconic striker left the Red Devils in 2018 when he returned to his boyhood club Everton on a free transfer. However, there is no disputing his place among the Old Trafford legends.
