A statement released by the Indian Wrestling Federation on Monday said that the Indian Wrestling Federation elections scheduled for July 11 have been postponed pending further court orders.
This comes after the Guwahati High Court on Sunday stopped voting on a petition by the Assam Wrestling Association.
The Assam Wrestling Association, in its petition against the WFI, the IOA ad hoc committee and the Ministry of Sports, said that although it was entitled to be an affiliate member of the WFI, it was not recognised.
The state unit alleged that the then Executive Committee of the International Federation of the Deaf (WFI) made a recommendation for its affiliation to the General Council of Federations in Gonda, on 15 November 2014, but it was refused recognition.
The IOA ad hoc committee has set June 25 as the last date to receive Electoral College names while the election is scheduled for July 11.
The petitioner argued that unless their body is affiliated with the WFI, and they can nominate their representative to the Electoral College, the electoral process should stop.
The court directed the defendants – an ad hoc body of the International Federation of Summer and the Ministry of Sports – that until the next date of the hearing, they must not proceed with the elections of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of the Federation and the Ministry of Sports.
The court set July 17 as the next date for the hearing.
The International Summer Federation, before it was suspended by the Ministry of Sports, set May 7 as the date for the elections. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, after meeting with the protesting wrestlers, said the IBF elections would be held by June 30.
The IOA then announced that the election would be held on July 4, but the returning officer set July 6 as the new date.
However, after five non-affiliated government agencies claimed they were eligible to vote, the returning staffer again postponed the election by five days, setting July 11 as the polling date.
