The seat of the Ochana Kalan Assembly and the Hisar Lok Sabha constituency has been the focus of contention between two prominent political families of Haryana – the Chautalas and the Singhs – for decades. They have also now become a major source of contention between the two ruling coalition partners, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Party, with both parties putting forward their own claims and counter-claims about them in the 2024 elections.
While the leader of the Janata Party and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala is the MLA of Oshana Kalan, the Hisar parliamentary seat is currently represented by Brijendra Singh of the BJP, son of former Union Minister Birender Singh. Both families have held each other in those two seats multiple times in their long-running battle over individual political leadership. Dushyant is the grandson of INLD Patriarch and former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala.
In the Lok Sabha polls conducted in April and May 2019, Brijendra defeated Dushyant in Hissar. However, in the October 2019 association polls, Dushyant defeated Brijendra’s mother, Prem Lata, in Oshana Kalan. She was sitting MLA for the seat.
With the 90-member Haryana assembly election throwing a suspended verdict in 2019, the incumbent BJP, emerging as the single largest party with 40 seats, joined JJP, which secured 10 seats, to form its own coalition government under the presidency. Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
Divisions between the BJP and Janata Party Japan have widened for some time, with both announcing that they will contest all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state in 2024 on their strength.
Both allies have also begun preparations for the Lok Sabha elections, with the BJP starting to stage rallies since Union Home Minister Amit Shah tossed a polling trumpet at a rally in Hisar on June 18.
JJP is set to launch Lok Sabha rallies from Sonipat on July 2.
“It is a matter of coincidence that both families, the Chautalas and the Singhs, are in some kind of alliance with each other now. Earlier, the Birender Singh family and the Chautala family had been competing against each other in Uchana Kalan for nearly four decades. Both families consider this seat as their stronghold. That is why they are unwilling to leave their claims in. A senior BJP leader told the Indian Express that there is a high possibility that we will again witness a tough competition between the two families for the same seat in the 2024 elections.
In the Hisar parliamentary seat, Birender first defeated Om Prakash Chautala in 1984. In 2014, Dushyant was elected from Hisar to the Lok Sabha. At that time, Brijendra was working with All India Civil Services. Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Brijendra resigned as an IAS officer and contested from Hisar for a BJP ticket, defeating Dushyant, who went on to defeat Prem Lata five months after Uchana Kalan.
Although Birender, a former Congress member, won five times from Oshana Kalan, he was defeated by Om Prakash Chautala in 2009. In the 2014 elections, he defeated Prem Lata Dushyant from the seat. In the same year Birender joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and was appointed to Prime Minister Narendra Maude’s cabinet.
“The conflict between both the Chautalas and the Singh family will certainly play a major factor if the alliance between BJP and JJP breaks down in the coming days. Although it is not yet certain whether the BJP will repeat Brijendra Singh in Hisar, the Chautala family wants to One of its members from this seat will certainly contest the Lok Sabha polls for the year 2024. It may be Dushyant Chautala’s younger brother Digvijay who has yet to register a victory despite running in the Lok Sabha poll from Sonipat and assembly election from Jind. Another senior BJP leader also said that even if BJP does not repeat Brijendra in Hisar, it will not be repeated for BJP and JJP for sure. The party leaves this seat to JJP in the name of the alliance.
Haryana BJP and formerly in charge of Tripura, Biplab Deb has practically announced Prem Lata as the party’s candidate from Oshana Kalan in the 2024 assembly elections.
In a sharp reaction to Biplab’s announcement, JJP said that Dushyant has defeated Prem Lata by more than 48,000 votes and will contest again from the same seat next year as well. The dispute intensified between the two allies after Bilab’s announcement.
Last week, Brijendra and Digvijay Chautala also got into a heated exchange. In a swipe at Brijendra, Digivjay said that “Hisar has been searching for the missing MP”. In response, Brijendra said, “He (Digivijay) is a self-proclaimed leader of his family’s party, and he never won an election in Sarpanch. He says one thing, but does another. It is not appropriate for me to respond to the statements of such a person,” adding that, ” No BJP leader, nor any BJP worker is happy with the BJP’s alliance with the Janata Janata Party.”
BJP sources told Indian Express that the party’s senior officers, including party chief JP Nada, Amit Shah, Biblab, Khattar and party state unit chief Om Prakash Dhankar recently held a meeting to discuss the issue of Haryana alliance and that it is final decision on the issue. will be taken soon.
