England were pleased to get something out of the first session as Australian opener Usman Khawaja was dismissed by Josh Tonge at luncheon on the first day of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.
Warner and Khawaja added 73 runs for the first wicket and it turned out to be an almost flawless opening session for the visitors after they were asked to bat first. However, Tongue set Khawaja up nicely to the inside while the latter made both arms crosses for a delivery that ended up swinging at him.
The ball hit the top of the stump, and Usman Khawaja was shocked to see the ball bounce off the seam. Here’s a video of the parcel:
Usman Khawaja’s wicket position does not change the fact that Australia gave an impressive response after being asked to bat first under Test conditions. David Warner has reached its half-century and looks increasingly ominous for the hosts at the time of writing.
Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith realize they missed out on the first Test and will be sure to score big this time around. James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson were all stingy, but it was Josh Tonge who delivered the feat England needed.
The hosts will want to learn from India’s mistakes in the WTC final. The Australian batsmen dug deep and welded the Indians in difficult conditions and then took scoring chances for a giant first-round score.
Visitors seem to be on their way to repeating this feat. England cannot afford to chase the match and will need to regroup and find a way to knock Australia out as soon as possible.
