Shiromani Akali Dal on Wednesday clarified her stance on Uniform Civil Code (UCC)stating that she opposes any such setup as it would have a “negative impact on minority and tribal communities”.
In a written statement, SAD leader and party spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said, “SAD has always opposed the preparation of the UCC and will submit its reservations on this matter to the 22 Law Commission And also in Parliament.
The SAD party believes that the country’s civil laws are influenced by faith, belief, sect, and customs and differ according to different religions. The senior leader added, “These must be preserved in the interests of protecting the social fabric and the concept of unity in diversity.”
Cheema said UCC was not granted basic rights status by the Constitution makers, and is kept on the synced list and is part of the state’s policy guidelines. “Changing this situation is undesirable because it will cause friction in society. Along with minority communities, tribal communities that have their own personal laws will be the most affected.”
He further said that if any particular personal law was discriminatory, it could be amended, but it was not advisable to form a local bar council for the whole country.
“The 21st Legal Commission also concluded that the UCC was neither possible nor desirable. This recommendation was made after due diligence and feedback from the people,” said Cheema.
Calling for “wider consultations on the issue”, the SAD leader said, “This should have been done before a private members’ bill in this regard was introduced in the Rajya Sabha”.
He also criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for expanding its support for the WUC, saying that this “exposed its anti-minority face”. The ACP leader added, “The League and its coordinator, Arvind Kejriwal, promised Balav in Punjab, but now they are publicly supporting a cause that would cause conflict in civil society.”
