Two months after a man was found hanging from a tree in Mumbai, the city police has turned an Accidental Death Report (ADR) into a murder case and has arrested two people in this regard, according to an official.

On April 19, the body was found hanging from a tree in Chembur district of Mumbai.

An official from Tilak Nagar Police Station said Wednesday that although the police initially registered a dispute resolution report, they suspected the man was murdered because some marks were found on the body.

When the police inquired from residents of the area where the body was found, some people told them that they had seen two men assault the victim on the day of the accident.

The people also told police they tried to intervene, but later left because the attackers did not listen to them, the official said.

Based on the input, the police scanned CCTV footage of the area and gathered more details.

The official said that the police, with the help of technical evidence, on Wednesday arrested the two accused, namely Gautam Purad alias Takalia (28) and Afzal Sheikh (20).

During interrogation, the defendants told the police that they had killed the man and subsequently hanged the body using a cloth rope, he said.

The accused also told the police that the three were drunk on the day of the accident. The official said that the man then assaulted them, and the accused in a fit of rage severely assaulted him and died.

Police added that a case has been registered against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 302 (murder).
