Justin Thomas is having a bad run on the PGA Tour. The 30-year-old golfer has only had three top-10 finishes in 2023, most recently last week at the Travelers Championship. The golfer finished ninth at TPC River Highlands, making it one of his best finishes of the year.
After the event, Justin Thomas opened up about his game and said he was unhappy with his form. However, the golfer credited his wife for improving his mentality despite a career slump. The former world No. 1, who played an impressive round of 62 last Saturday, said a message from his wife, Jillian Wisniewski, made him think right before the tournament.
He revealed that a text message from his wife asking him to “remember why he loves this game” prompted him to improve the game. Speaking ahead of the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic outing in Detroit, Justin Thomas said, as quoted by Golf Monthly:
“Last week I didn’t feel right about my golf swing at the start of the week and I kind of said, ‘I’m going to go over here and putt and play golf… All to the credit of that, honestly, my wife on Wednesday night last week sent me a message that woke me up Thursday And it kind of resonated with me, and it really hit home better than anything I’d heard.
I said just remember why you love this game and why you are playing this game and why you are there just enjoy it and subscribe. It hit home for me… So last week, any kind of challenge, any good thing that happened, anything bad that happened, I kind of remembered that’s why I play pro golf, that’s why I’m doing this. You know, it’s like anything, you’re just trying to get better.”
Justin Thomas has been very vocal about his disappointment at the US Open and sent a text message from his wife helping him get the right headspace to play last week at the Travelers where he finished tied for ninth.

Thomas admitted he was having a “tough” time before the motivational text from his wife. He said he’s been working on his game, but he’s still struggling with his form. The PGA Tour star stated that he “learned a lot from the US Open” but couldn’t capitalize on it in the tournament.
Justin Thomas to take “one step at a time” from now
Justin Thomas is back in action again this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and he’s ready to take on the challenge. The golfer reflected on how he has stayed mentally strong in the past few months and added that he was looking forward to taking it “one step at a time” from now on.
He said:
“I need to take it one step at a time. I’m very lucky I’ve never been in that position in my career, but unfortunately I need to play some good golf to worry about — not to worry, but to take one step at a time. In the past I was already looking for East Lake at this point in the season, but I’m not in that place right now, so I just need to keep building and keep working on who I’ve been.”
Justin Thomas will kick off Thursday at 1:05 p.m. at TPC River Highlands. He will be joined by Hideki Matsuyama and Songjae Im on the first pole position.
