Bengaluru Police has issued a notice to cowsitter and right-wing activist Puneeth Kerhali, 35, to include his name in the list of persons designated as a rowdy in Karnataka due to his involvement in six offenses in the state since 2021, including murder, assault and criminal intimidation.
He was recently accused in the case of the death of a cattle transporter, Idris Pasha, 39, who was stopped and attacked in Ramanagara district, on the border with Bengaluru, by the guard and his associates on the night of March 31 and April 1.
Police in Bengaluru West Division issued a notice to Kerehalli on 26 June based on a police report about the cow ranger’s involvement in multiple cases. Police sought a response from Kerehalli as to why his name was not added to the list of rioters. Among the cases cited by the Bengaluru Police to initiate the notice are two police cases filed in Satnoor in Ramanagara where Kerhali and his accomplices attacked 39-year-old Pasha and two others on 31 March.
Idris Pasha died in the aftermath of the attack as the guards used tasers or stun guns to take upon themselves the duty to implement the Karnataka Prevention of Cattle Slaughter Act 2020 passed by the erstwhile BJP government in 2021.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Pasha had died of a heart attack. However, the police suspect that the accused may have used a stun gun to neutralize Al-Basha which may have led to a cardiac arrest. Kerhali was granted bail by the Karnataka High Court in May based on an autopsy report which indicated he had suffered a heart attack. In a second case involving the control of cows, Kerhali was charged with stopping an Alimola Baig tanker for illegal transportation of cattle at the e-City Police boundary in Bengaluru on March 20. A case was filed by the victim after Pasha’s death in the Ramanagara case. On March 31st.
In his complaint to the Electronics City Police, Baig alleged that while he was traveling on Hosur Road with cattle in a lorry, his car was stopped by Kerhali and his companions. The gang allegedly beat Paige and the driver and used a stun gun. The torture lasted for about an hour, during which Kerhaley and his comrades threw the abuse at Paige and shouted, “The police won’t but we will give you treatment.”
A video of the attack on the transporters at the city’s cyber police border was posted on Kerehalli’s social media handles. Beg did not report the assault until Pasha’s death where Kırhali threatened him with dire consequences.
The third case cited by Bengaluru Police of a feisty Kerehalli ad is an August 2021 case registered by Begur Police regarding efforts to install a religious statue in Begur Lake despite an HC court order to preserve the lake.
According to the complaint filed by Leo Saldanha, a petitioner in one of the cases in the High Commission on the construction of an artificial island, the FIR is registered at the Begoro Police Station in the city. It had named Puneeth Kerehalli, Santosh Karatal and others to unveil a statue on August 11 that had been covered with tarpaulins until then. Kirhaly is also accused of making provocative statements against minorities on social media over the issue.
Kerehalli has also been cited by the Bengaluru Police as a defendant in the 1989 SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) and Criminal Intimidation case filed by Shivakumar Naik at Chamarajpet in December 2022 and the January 2022 case filed by a police officer at Hampi Police Station Tourism against Kerehalli and nine others for violating Covid standards.
There are approximately 7,000 hooligans appointed in Bengaluru. A person who is identified as a hooligan under the Karnataka Police Handbook will be under the constant supervision of the Police Department and will need to appear regularly at police stations to declare that he is not involved in crimes. Three records are kept on brawlers which are categorized into three categories based on fame. The police also conduct regular searches of their homes and residences.
