Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s political career evaporated Friday as a majority of federal electoral court judges voted to ban him from holding public office until 2030 for his behavior during last year’s fraught election.
Four out of seven justices (TSE) voted to convict Bolsonaro of abuse of power and misuse of the media last year, when he summoned ambassadors to vent baseless allegations about Brazil’s electronic voting system. There are still two more judges to vote.
Bolsonaro, a former army captain who narrowly lost an October election to his left-wing rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is accused of creating a national movement to overturn the election result that culminated in the January 8 invasion of government buildings in Brasilia by thousands of his supporters. .
The lead judge in the case, Benedetto Goncalves, voted earlier this week to disqualify the former president for eight years, saying he “took advantage of the meeting with the ambassadors to sow suspicion and incite conspiracy theories.”
Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing and has already said he is planning a Supreme Court.
I did not attack the voting system. “She showed her potential flaws,” Bolsonaro said in an interview with radio station Itatiaia on Friday before the verdict. “This trial makes no sense.”
