Tripura Police on Friday rescued a contractor just hours after he was kidnapped in broad daylight by a group of miscreants near the northern gate of the palace complex in the city of Agartala.
Speaking to reporters late on Friday, West Tripura Police Inspector Kiran Kumar said contractor, Shyamal Deb, was forced into a vehicle at Northgate. We’re taking details of who’s behind the kidnapping. We will arrest them soon. “There were some sensitive issues involved and we are investigating,” he said. The contractor gave four to five names of suspects to the police.
Reporting that Deb was rescued from Vatikera in western Tripura, the SP said teams will be formed and service representatives from neighboring areas will be contacted as part of efforts to apprehend the accused.
Depp claimed that he was kidnapped because he had recently been awarded contracts for some work in the Public Works Department (PWD) in Khwai District. Speaking to reporters shortly after his rescue, the contractor said he went to Gorkhapasti in the city for some work and came across a traffic post near the north gate when a group of 8 to 10 people surrounded him and asked him to get into their car, leaving his motorbike on the street.
They forced me into the car and went to Vatikira tea garden. They had a letter of surrender for me to sign. They snatched my phone and found that the police was calling me. After realizing I was being tracked, they dropped me there and left. I took an auto rickshaw until Shalabhan and the police rescued me later. .
Deep said the kidnappers targeted him because the contract for three works, including maintenance of two buildings and road works, combined amounted to Rs 60 lakh. Seeking the intervention of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in this matter, he said, “I am active in the Bharatiya Janata Party and I am inspired by the ideology of the Prime Minister. I demand the Prime Minister to take the initiative to end the mafia raj.”
Senior police officials in Tripura confirmed that they are taking several steps to reduce crimes including thefts, assaults and kidnappings. Recently, West Tripura SP has admitted that theft cases are on the rise and has announced a series of actions in this regard.
