The government official alleged that suburban residents were responsible for bringing weapons into the city and for killing children in its community. The Associated Press announced that the next two-year budget will increase funding for K-12 schools by cutting income taxes across the board. The upcoming budget will also cut the University of Wisconsin’s budget in an effort to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion.
During the debate, a discussion arose regarding crime in Milwaukee and concerns about its spread from the city to the suburbs. This continued to elicit an unexpected response from Latonia Johnson.
Latonya Johnson climbed onto the Senate floor and blamed suburbanites for the city’s increased crime rates. She said:
“F**k the suburbs, because they don’t know anything about how life in the city is.”
She went on to express indifference to Milwaukee, which is suffering from an increase in criminal activity.
Netizens respond to Latonya Johnson’s statement
Netizens were outraged by what the legislator said. Many hope she will resign from her position or be reprimanded for her statement. She was an op-ed writer for the Wisconsin Law Journal among many calling for her resignation. They said:
“Hate of the suburbs or of anyone or anywhere in Wisconsin has no home here. Resigned Senator Latonya Johnson. Wisconsin does not have time to hate you and your lack of civility.”
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney took to Twitter to express his gratitude for living in Milwaukee and having a safe community. He went on to add that he wishes his community experienced less carjacking, reckless driving, shootings and other criminal activities.
