The Ministry of Promotion of Industry and Domestic Trade (DPIIT) has given Maharashtra an initial approval to construct a mega complex of footwear and leather accessories at Ratwad, located in Raigad district.
The Mega Leather Footwear and Accessories Cluster Park will be spread over 151 acres and will serve as a hub for collaboration, innovation and growth in the leather industry by integrating manufacturers, suppliers, designers and artisans.
Currently Maharashtra is the eighth largest producer and exporter of leather goods in the country. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) alone contributes 21% of the country’s leather exports, highlighting the crucial role of the state in the industry.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, on behalf of the state, has submitted a proposal for project development. The Government of India will provide grant money of up to Rs 125 crore for this project.
