Vadodara Police on Saturday launched an investigation into the death of a couple whose dead bodies were found inside their sixth-floor apartment in a housing colony in the city’s Gothri district late on Friday night.

According to the police, Ashish Mani allegedly killed his wife, Aarti, before hanging himself. The couple is survived by their two-and-a-half-year-old son, who was handed over to the Ashish family. The two bodies were sent for an autopsy at the SSG hospital on Saturday.

Guthrie police, who are investigating the case, said the preliminary autopsy report concluded that Aarti had died of asphyxia and showed “visible signs” of hand suffocation.

Police said the incident took place after 6 pm when Ashish, who was working as an executive in a bank in the city, came home from work. Guthrie police received a call from the police control room, where the couple’s neighbors had called for help late Friday evening. Inspector MK Gurjar of Guthrie Police Station said, “The young son of the couple used to visit the neighbour’s house every evening. As usual, he went out through the door, which was open, and spent some time with his neighbours. When they entered the apartment to hand over the child to his mother, they discovered Ashish hanging and Aarti’s dead body.” Neighbors immediately called the police.” No note has been recovered from the apartment.

According to the neighbours’ account, the couple was having a marital rift due to Ashish’s suspicious nature. Neighbors told us the couple had frequent fights as Ashish used to suspect Aarti of being unfaithful. He used to lock his wife and child in the house and go to work and only open the door when he got home. There was no sign of a fight on Friday evening, according to close neighbours. However, we have not yet recorded statements from the families of the two children.

Gurjar said that the police have registered an accidental death and will file a murder case against Ashish.
