The state highway police official said road hypnosis is considered one of the causes of accidents on the wide six-lane access-controlled highway.
As many as 88 people have died in road accidents in the past six months on the Samruddhi highway in Maharashtra, including 25 on Saturday where a private bus caught fire after crashing into a barrier, an official said. The state highway police official said road hypnosis is cited as one of the causes of accidents on the six-lane access-controlled highway.
Highway hypnosis or hypnosis is a condition when a driver exits while driving a vehicle without remembering what happened in that specific period. A total of 39 fatal accidents have occurred on the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway since December last year when it was partially opened, the official said quoting the data.
He pointed out that 616 minor and major accidents occurred on this highway, in which 656 people suffered minor and serious injuries. Most of the accidents were due to causes such as excessive speed, drowsy drivers at the wheel, and blown tires.
The official said the highway police were trying to address the issue of road hypnosis. He added that across Maharashtra, 15,224 people died in road accidents in 2022.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, police said, 25 passengers died of charred as the private bus they were traveling in caught fire after it crashed into a highway barrier in Buldana district. The 701-kilometer Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg runs 601 kilometers from the largest city of Vidarbha to Bharvir in Nashik.
