Delhi Public Works Minister Atishi alleged that Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena ordered the demolition of 14 religious places including three shrines in the national capital, adding that a Shiva temple in north-east Delhi was destroyed on Sunday morning. The leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said she had recently written to Saxena about the matter stating that former AAP minister Manish Sisodia opposed the demolition move.

Quoting the letter she sent to LG a few days ago, the minister said in a tweet, “I wrote you a letter a few days ago asking you to reverse your decision to demolish temples and other religious places in Delhi. But today again on your orders a temple in Delhi has been demolished.” Bhanpura.”

“I ask you again not to demolish the temples and other religious places in Delhi. People’s faith is linked to these,” she said.

In the letter, the minister wrote, “I have received information from the Department of Persons with Disabilities that you have ordered the demolition of 14 religious places in Delhi. It includes 11 temples and 3 tombs. The department’s officers told me that when the proposal to demolish these religious places came to the then Home Minister Manish Sisodia through Religious Committee In February 2023, he registered his protest and said that instead of demolishing the temple, we should change the design of the project.

Atishi alleged that LG rejected Sisodia’s proposal and ordered the demolition of these temples and other religious places. “Also tell the officers that you have written in the file that demolition of temples is a matter of ‘law and order’, so you have full authority to make decisions in this matter. Also, instead of any file for temple demolition being sent to the elected government, the file should be sent to you directly through First Secretary,” read the letter.

The minister further said that PWD informed her on Thursday evening that they will demolish these temples following LG’s order. “This morning a Shiv temple in Mandwali was demolished… Therefore, I ask you to reverse your decision to demolish 11 temples and other religious places so that the religious faith of the people of Delhi will not be harmed,” she said.
