The decision was made due to the significant improvement in the law and order situation in the area, said the notice issued by Additional District Judge N. Johnson Mitai.

Restrictions under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure have been eased in the violence-hit Imphal West district of Manipur on Sunday, according to a notice.

The notification issued by Additional County Judge N. Johnson Mitai Saturday said the restrictions on people’s movement were imposed May 3 after clashes broke out in the state.

“…restrictions on movement of the general public outside their residences have been lifted on 2 July 2023 (Sunday) from 05:00 am to 06:00 pm for all areas of Imphal West District,” the statement read.

She added that the decision was taken due to the significant improvement in the law and order situation in the region, adding that there is also a need to ease restrictions to allow people to purchase essential items, including medicine and food.

More than 100 people have been killed in ethnic violence between the Mitte and Koki communities in the North Eastern state so far.

Meiteis account for about 53% of the population of Manipur and most of them live in the Imphal Valley. Tribes – Nagas and Kukis – make up another 40 percent of the population and reside in the hill regions.
