National Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar was sworn in on Sunday as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra as he joined the government led by Eknath Shinde. He will share the post with Devendra Fadnavis of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Besides Pawar, eight more MLAs have taken the oath to join the Maharashtra government – Shaghan Bhojbal, Dilip Wallis Patel, Hassan Musharraf,
Dhananjay Munde, Dharmobaba Atram, Aditi Tatkare, Sanjay Bansode and Anil Patil.

A meeting of NCP leaders was called at the residence of Ajit Pawar earlier today, who later along with other party leaders arrived at Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Ramesh Pais. Pawar then took the oath as the second Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Prime Minister Eknath Shinde was also present on the occasion.

Pawar was said to be disgruntled after being denied the opportunity to serve as head of the government unit of the National Congress Party. Earlier, he had offered to resign as Leader of the Opposition, asking for organizational responsibility.

In 2019, he teamed up with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister along with Fadnavis as Chief Minister. However, the rebellion did not last for more than three days and Ajit Pawar returned to the NCP fold.
