The end of the Rocket Mortgage Classic couldn’t be more interesting, as three players battle it out in a playoff. Americans Colin Morikawa and Ricky Fowler and Canadian Adam Hadwin finished tied for first with -24.
Morikawa was having a great closing day at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, with an 8 birdie and a bogey zero, with a score of -8, just one stroke off the Detroit Golf Club record.
On the other hand, Fowler didn’t make bogeys either, even though he only had four birdies. But his excellent performance in the previous days was enough to force the final.
Something similar happened with Hadwin, who jumped straight into the fray for the No. 1 spot after signing a 9-under 63 (record) on Saturday. On Sunday, the Canadian had a strong closing run, with five birdies and a bogey-free round.
In the playoff, the three players vying for the Rocket Mortgage Classic title will play holes 18th, 15th, 16th, and 14th (in that order), eliminating each other when ties are broken.
The winner will receive tournament prize money of just over $1.5 million.
Morikawa, Fowler and Hadwin at the Rocket Mortgage Classic
Colin Morikawa has been very consistent with his play throughout the Rocket Mortgage Classic. His score was -24 on a basis of 66-67-67-64, a performance close to the career bests of a winner of five PGA Tour championships, two of which are majors.
Ricky Fowler also had a very strong performance, so much so that the worst round was precisely the closing one. He played on a 67-65-64-68 basis, and went on an excellent run, starting at the last US Open, where he was among the best players.
As mentioned earlier, Adam Hadwin was good in the first, second and fourth rounds (66, 68 and 67), but it was what he did on Saturday (63) that put him into Sunday’s game.
It was a record-breaking day, with seven birds and an eagle, plus not a single bogey.
The playoff record for Morikawa and Fowler is quite similar. Morikawa has faced three PGA Tour playoffs, beating Justin Thomas at the Workday Charity Open in the 2019-20 season.
He also had two losses, one to Daniel Berger in the Charles Schwab Challenge in the 2019-20 season, and one to Patrick Cantlay in the Memorial Tournament in 2021.
Meanwhile, Fowler faced four playoff games with one win over Morikawa. Defeat Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner for the 2014-15 THE PLAYERS Championship, and Rory McIlroy, DA Points for the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship.
Fowler’s losses came in qualifying at the 2015-16 Waste Management Phoenix Open (to Hideki Matsuyama) and Frys.com Open, (to Jamie Lovemark, Troy Matteson).
Meanwhile, Hadwin faces his first career playoff match on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
