West Bengal Governor C.
Bose visited Phulmalancha district in Basanti district where he will meet the bereaved family and assess the situation, the official told PTI.
He said the governor spoke to family members of the slain TMC worker Sunday night from the train he was traveling on. The official said Bose’s return to Kolkata had been rearranged from flight to training to enable him to communicate better with people as his mobile phone would have to be switched off during the flight.
“The governor does not want to be separated from the people, so he decided to cancel his air travel and reschedule it on the train so that people can contact him and submit their complaints,” he said.
A police officer said the TMC worker, identified as 52-year-old Jiyarul Malla, was shot dead late Saturday night as he was returning home from Canning town.
The daughter of the deceased Manwara, a TMC candidate from Kathalpriya Gram Panchayat, alleged that her father was receiving life threats from a rival faction.
The governor had earlier visited the violence-affected areas of Dinhata in Cooch Behar district, and Canning and Bangar in the southern 24 Parganas.
About 5.67 crore people are entitled to cast their ballots in the state’s three-tier panchayat elections on July 8 for nearly 74,000 seats in Zilla Parisad, Samitis panchayat and Gram panchayat.
