The incident took place on Sunday when the police arrested the man from Nurbagh district and took him to Ratuli Police Station affiliated to Al-Khadiya Police Station, his father said.

A Uttar Pradesh policeman has been diverted to police lines after a 26-year-old man was assaulted in police custody resulting in his death.

Police denied the allegations of assault made by the man’s family members, saying the matter was under investigation.

His father Babu said that the incident took place on Sunday when the police arrested Sajid from Nurbagh district and took him to Ratuli Police Station of Kheda Police Station.

He was tortured and when his condition deteriorated he was handed over to us. We took him to the hospital but the doctors pronounced him dead, Babu claimed.

After the death, Sajid’s family members and some locals staged a roadblock to demand action against the guilty.

Superintendent of Police Arpit Vejayvarjia said that precinct officer Preeta Singh has been asked to investigate the allegation. He said that the policeman accused of assaulting Sajid was transferred to the police lines.

An autopsy on the victim is underway, the note said, adding that no complaint has been filed against any policeman by Sajid’s family members so far.
