Former England captain Michael Vaughan thinks they are very lucky to have Ben Stokes as Test captain. Vaughan saw that everything thrives on tough situations and that his strength shines through.

In his column for The Telegraph, the 48-year-old mentioned the versatile player’s ability to thrive in difficult situations as his “superpower”. He also considered the task of winning three consecutive Ashes Tests to inspire the England captain.

He seems to thrive under adversity and pressure,” Vaughan said. “He likes it most when it gets tough and when you think he’s got half a body not working – it’s his strength that shines through. We’re so lucky to have him as England Test captain. He now has the biggest challenge and that’s what inspires him to force his amazing comeback in the series from this impossible situation. Stokes’ innings ended on the fifth day at Lord’s on 155 when England were still short of their target of 70. He received a standing ovation as he left the field, but the home team eventually lost by 43 runs to go down 0–2.

Vaughan also noted that Stokes is a proven clutch player, and has proven himself on multiple occasions as he has great faith in himself.
“I never knew an England cricketer beat the impossible like Stokes,” he said. “We saw it in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s, we saw it in the Headingley Ashes test in 2019 and we saw it again in this test. I know the result would have been different, but Stokes’ innings has been just as amazing as what he had done at Leeds four years ago. The way he absorbs pressure, backs himself up and has the skill and self-confidence to seize the moment – it’s just amazing. What a cricketer he is.”
If England fight back and win the match 3-2, it will be the second time this has happened in Ashes history.
