The United States on Monday became the only country to hold up adoption of a draft resolution on biofuels introduced by India at the MEPC session here, calling for further discussions on the matter before recommending it to a working group on air pollution and energy efficiency for finalization. Resolution / generalization.
Sources told PTI that the US came up with the proposal Monday morning at the 80th session of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) without bringing it up in earlier deliberations when the vast majority of the group considered it an immediate demand and should be considered further. By the Intersessional Working Group on Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency.
The sources said that the opposition raised by the United States may be due to the fact that the promotion of biofuels as a low fuel could negatively affect the promotion of other green fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen, which are the two fuels that the United States is investing in.
India’s Marine Environmental Protection Commission draft resolution introduced biofuels certified by the International Certification Scheme to ensure that the sustainability aspects of the LCA guidelines have a CO2 conversion factor set as zero.
This draft resolution aims to facilitate the uptake of biofuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“The Intersessional Working Group discussed the same, and the vast majority of the group considered it an immediate requirement and should be considered by the Working Group on Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency,” said a representative of the Indian delegation.
But the draft resolution could not be submitted to the working group as the US called for further discussions.
We are certainly not against biofuels. We wanted to hear more people’s feedback on it in plenary before presenting it to the IWG. We don’t have another agenda,” a delegate representing the US told PTI.
