Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said every migrant worker working in the state must have a labor card provided by the state government

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said about 90% of crimes in the coastal state are committed by migrant workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other regions, urging contractors to obtain “business cards” before hiring them.

Sawant made the claim at a Labor Day celebration on 1st of May in Panaji.

The Chief Minister said that every migrant worker working in the state must have a labor card provided by the state government.

The Government of Goa issues labor cards to those who work in the private, industrial and unorganized sectors to keep a record of employment as well as extend welfare measures to this category.

Sawant said it is necessary to trace the details of the workers because “after a crime is committed in Goa, migrant workers often return to their home state and it becomes difficult to locate them.”

“About 90 percent of crimes in Goa are committed by migrant workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other regions,” the chief minister said.

Sawant said the state government has roped in two NGOs to ensure that cards are issued to all workers. The Prime Minister announced that the facility for workers to register for the card will be done online soon.

Once the cards are issued to all workers, he said, it will be easier to access the database. “It will also help the police in investigating and tracing cases,” Sawant added.
