A woman in Kottayam district of Kerala has committed suicide after being bullied online by her ex-boyfriend.

The woman was found dead on Monday at her home in Manjore village, Kaduthuruthi district of Kottayam district. The police filed a case in connection with the incident and launched an investigation.

According to the police, she received a complaint that the 26-year-old woman, Athira, ended her life due to cyberbullying by her ex-boyfriend after their relationship went bad.

Police said the complaint also alleged that along with the cyberattacks, the man also triggered personal online chats between the two.

Athira was the sister-in-law of a secondary collector in Manipur who claimed she was a victim of “cyberbullying” and “online harassment”.

“She was facing online harassment for the past two days with a man posting her photos online. We filed a complaint. But the man who did this was in hiding. “The police couldn’t trace his whereabouts,” he told reporters.

He also said that the alleged perpetrator was aware of the complaint to the police and that they were looking for him, but despite this, he continued with the cyberattacks.

He said that before going to sleep everyone would comfort the victim and tell her not to worry, but she took her own life the next day.

She was going to get married. “A wedding was to be held in this house,” said Athira’s son-in-law.
