Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate one of the country’s longest footpaths in Chennai in the second week of May.

The 570-meter-long, 4.2-meter-wide skywalk, which connects Mambalam Railway Station and T Nagar Bus Station, was constructed by Greater Chennai at a value of Rs 28 crore under Smart City funds.

The skywalk has lifts at both ends, one escalator at the end of the bus stand, CCTVs monitoring connected to the Mambalam police station, and restrooms for the convenience of the passengers.

According to GCC officials, construction of the structure started in 2020 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chief Engineer S Rajendran told Indianexpress.com that building the skywalk in one of the busiest areas of the city was a challenge.

The multimodal project connects the railway station and the bus stand. The infantry will help. People arriving in the city from southern parts of the state find it difficult to navigate to the station and bus stand due to the congregation on Ranganathan Road, which gets very crowded during festivals like Deepavali. People had to walk around the crowded street with their heavy bags to get to their point, and we believe this pedestrian walkway will help them overcome these issues.”

He said that they had difficulty removing the shops to build the facility, but they were able to do so after they promised the street vendors suitable alternative places.

We also plan to put in some wheelchairs for people with different abilities. If people find it difficult to walk for a long time, we have plans to have a walker, which is common in airports, and depending on the strength of the chassis, maybe a battery car as well, but these are just preliminary ideas. It will be difficult to maintain it properly because it is usually used indoors. There is an idea to build a similar corridor at another point in the proposal. Let’s see how it goes.”

The officer said they would watch the lane closely to ensure no one occupied the bridge causing inconvenience to pedestrians.
