Washington: One person was killed and three were injured in a city in the southern United States Atlanta Police said on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire inside a building in the latest armed violence to hit the country.
The department said on Twitter that police were responding to an “active shooting inside a building” in downtown Atlanta that targeted four people.
“Three were taken to hospital for treatment, and a fourth died at the scene,” she added.
Police also released a photo of the suspect, a well-built man wearing dark pants, a hood over his head, a white surgical mask, and holding a handgun.
“The suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached,” police said.
Television footage showed police and other law enforcement officers deployed to the scene. Multiple ambulances were also present.
Local television channel WSB reported that the shooting took place inside a Northside Hospital facility.
There have been more than 180 mass shootings — defined as four or more people injured or killed — so far this year in the United States, according to the Archives of Gun Violence.
With more firearms than population, the United States has the highest rate of gun-related deaths of any developed country: 49,000 in 2021, up from 45,000 the year before.
