Nizar Sayyad used a raincoat to hide his identity, but his gait allegedly caused him to turn away. In August last year, Sayyad, an employee of a courier company, was arrested by the Mumbai police for allegedly stealing 1.5 lakh rupees from his office locker in Vikruli. According to the police, a fisherman was arrested by matching his gait to that of the criminal caught in the CCTV footage.
The incident occurred at the courier company’s office located in Vikhroli on August 14 when Rs 1.5 lakh was found to be missing from the office locker. The principal then contacted the local police as an FIR was recorded on the matter and the police began an investigation.
An officer said that since the principal knew the approximate time the crime was committed, they ran through footage from CCTV cameras installed in the office. The police found pictures of a person wearing a raincoat entering the office at about the same time and leaving within a few minutes.
“While we were sure this was the person behind the crime, the person made sure that his face was not caught on the surveillance camera,” the officer said. However, this itself turned out to be a clue to the police as they believed it was someone who knew the location of the cameras and thus hinted at an inside job.
After viewing the footage, the police questioned more than 15 of the company’s employees. An officer said that all employees were made to wear raincoats and told to walk some distance. Based on their walking style, the police identified 21-year-old Sayyad and arrested him.
According to the police, Sayad, a resident of Ghatkopar, bought a bike a year ago and wanted to pay back the loan he had taken from a relative. Finding it hard to come by, he allegedly decided to steal money from the company’s treasury because it was on hand.
He was arrested on August 22 and brought before a court which returned him to police custody. One of the officers said they found evidence from his house, including Rs 80,000 in cash.
