As temperatures continued to swing in unexpected directions, Delhi experienced an unusual episode of shallow fog on Thursday morning, with the mercury dropping to 15.8°C, the coldest May morning since 1901.
May, which is historically the hottest month of the year in the national capital, usually recalls the maximum temperature of 39.5°C.
The Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of at least 10 degrees below normal on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in Delhi.
This was due to intermittent rain and cloudy weather under the influence of successive western disturbances.
Monday’s high dropped to 26.2°C, making it the coldest day in May since weather preservation began in the country.
Delhi recorded a maximum of 28.3°C on Tuesday.
Why Delhi experienced fog in May?
According to officials of the Meteorological Department, the high humidity in the air, calm winds and the large difference between day and night temperatures create conditions that form fog, according to the news agency. PTI.
According to IMD, shallow haze is when visibility is between 501 and 1,000 meters.
Delhi is experiencing an unpredictable pattern with cloudy skies, sporadic rain and cold weather, which officials attribute to cascading western disturbances affecting northwest India.
Residents posted on social media videos and photos of the haze covering the city’s skyline.
The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s main weather station, recorded 30mm of rain in a 24-hour period ending at 8.30am on Thursday.
It recorded a maximum temperature of 30.6C, nine degrees lower than normal, on Wednesday, and a minimum temperature of 15.8C on Thursday, the third lowest in the month since weather keeping began in 1901.
An all-time low of 15.1°C was recorded on May 2, 1969. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 15.2°C on May 2, 1982.
Humidity levels fluctuated between 80 percent and 100 percent in most places in the city.
Met officials said another wave of rain is likely from Friday onwards.
Delhi recorded more than 20 mm of rain in April, the highest level in a month since 2017, due to back-to-back western disturbances.
An official with the International Institute for Democracy (IMD) said another western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from May 5.
The maximum temperature is expected to remain below 35°C until May 8.
The Met Office predicted lower-than-normal temperatures and fewer heatwave days in northwest India in May.
