US President Joe Biden chose one of his top aides, Nira Tethto replace Susan Rice as domestic policy adviser, the White House said in a statement.
Tanden, a longtime Democratic aide who served in two previous presidential administrations, will take on one of the administration’s most senior policy jobs, covering most areas outside of national security and the economy.
As Biden’s staff secretary, Tanden already played a key role in the West Wing, dominating schedules and briefing on books and other papers arriving at the president’s desk.
Stephanie Feldman, a Rice aide who has long been a senior in Biden’s orbit, will replace Tanden as staff secretary.
“Nera oversaw decision-making processes across the local, economic and national security teams,” Biden said in a statement that touted his 25 years of public policy experience. “She was a key architect of the Affordable Care Act and helped drive key local policies that have become part of my business, including subsidies for clean energy and reasonable gun reform.”
Tanden’s predecessor on the Domestic Policy Council, Susan Rice, departed after a two-year stint that included disagreements over fraying issues from immigration to healthcare, gun and police reform.
The move comes as Biden continues to face some headwinds on immigration after promising to roll back all the restrictive policies imposed under his Republican predecessor Donald Trump.

Tanden, long seen as a lightning rod for her stern tweets, was picked to her current behind-the-scenes job after being forced to withdraw her nomination as budget chief amid fierce opposition from Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from the West. Virginia.
While Republicans have attacked Tanden for her left-leaning views, she has sparred with the progressive camp over her support for Clinton against Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic presidential race, and stoked fire for her support of cuts to the Social Security retirement program to balance it out. Budget for nearly a decade.
