The victim, Amit Kumar Chakma, was campaigning for assembly elections in Lokhesuri village when some miscreants attacked him.
A BJP candidate for the Chakma Autonomous District Assembly elections has been killed and six others injured in a clash in Longtlai district of southern Mizoram, a senior official said on Friday.
The official told PTI that the victim, Amit Kumar Chakma, was campaigning for assembly elections in Lokhesuri village when some miscreants attacked him with a machete on Thursday night.
He died on the spot, said Chakma, who was contesting a BJP ticket from the Ringkashia seat in the ACC election. The official said that a person has been arrested in connection with the incident. The official added that the district election officer had annulled the election in the Ringkashya seat on the suggestion of the state election commission. Meanwhile, the state’s sole BJP MLA BD Chakma demanded an investigation into the incident.
“I am deeply shocked to hear of the death of Amit Kumar Chakma, the official BJP MDC candidate from Ringkashya constituency due to a brutal attack by some miscreants last night when he was on a campaign trail in Lokhesuri village. Chakma said on his official Facebook page,” Shakma said on his official Facebook page. I strongly demand immediate investigations and the arrest of the perpetrators.”
Amit Kumar Chakma was sent by the Bharatiya Janata Party for the Ringkashya seat. He is a former executive member of the Chakma Council (CEM) and has successfully contested the council’s polls twice for a congressional ticket.
After switching to the Mizo National Front (MNF), Chakma has recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
A total of 73 candidates are contesting the Chakma assembly elections, which will be held on May 9. The votes will be counted on May 11.
MNF, BJP and Congress fielded 20 candidates each, while ZPM fielded 13 candidates.
A total of 35,885 voters, including 17,677 women, are eligible to exercise their right to vote at the polls.
CADC was established under Schedule VI of the Constitution in 1972 for the welfare of the people of the Chakma tribe of Mizoram.
The Council includes 24 seats, 4 of which are candidates.
The council has been under the rule of the governor since December last year.
