As Sharad Pawar announced on Friday that he would withdraw his decision to step down as the chairman of the National Congress Party (NCP), both the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) – Maha Vikas Agadi constituents – welcomed the move.

“I am glad that Sharad Pawar ji has withdrawn his decision to resign as NCP President. His guidance and leadership are required for the ongoing struggle to save democracy in the country,” said Sachin Sawant, General Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.

Earlier in the day, right after the NCP committee unanimously decided to reject Pawar’s resignation, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the committee’s decision was right and welcome.

“There is no other alternative to Bawar Sahib. The decision was expected. He is the highest-ranking, recognized and nationally accepted leader and his leadership is essential to the unity of the opposition. All the opposition parties in the country want him to remain in office,” Raut said.

However, the ruling side described it as a “significant stroke” by Pawar to deal with “turmoil in the NCP”.

“Sharad Pawar Sahib played the power game. Everyone knows there is a rift within the NCP. Syed Sharad Pawar Sahib’s strike was at this juncture for that, which shocked all the cadres of his party and also validated the position he holds in the party,” Sanjay Chirsat, Speaker On behalf of Shiv Sena and MLA.

Deputy Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that this was “an internal matter for the NCP”.

It is an internal matter for the National Congress Party. Both the script and the players enacting the roles belong to the NCP. Like in any cinema, we want to see the still-awaited climax,” said Fadnavis, who arrived in Maharashtra on Friday night after campaigning for two days in Karnataka for the People’s Assembly elections.

“Nobody can predict the game of Pawar Sahib,” said Minister of State Dipak Kesarkar. “But what he did today strengthened his position in the party as well as in state and state politics,” he added.

Sena (UBT), in an editorial in Saamna, on Thursday, said that some NCP leaders who expressed regret after Pawar’s resignation were about to join the BJP and Pawar’s resignation exposed them.
