South Africa and Australia will embark on a white balls series consisting of three T20Is and five ODIs from August 30 to September 17. The tour will start with the T20I series while the ODIs will start from September 7 onwards.
The two nations were scheduled to play a three-match ODI series in January 2023 in Australia, but South Africa abandoned the bilateral relationship to conduct the first edition of the SA20.
The upcoming five-match ODI series will be in particular focus as it provides an excellent means of preparation, keeping in mind the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in India in October-November.
Australia will also be looking to start their journey towards the 2024 T20 World Cup under their new captain. The Australians are yet to announce their new T20 captain following Aaron Finch’s retirement from international cricket following the 2022 T20 World Cup on home soil.
South Africa, meanwhile, have won 11 of the 12 ODIs they have played against Australia, which includes winning the 2019 ODI World Cup plus two series. Australia’s last ODI win in South Africa came astonishingly in 2011, and the Australians will be in anticipation of overturning that dismal record.
Australia recently beat India 2-1 in a three-match ODI series away from home, while the Proteas secured a decisive series win over the Netherlands to cement their case for automatic World Cup qualification.
The team, led by Temba Bafuma, ranks eighth in the standings with 98 points. Their qualification now hinges on the upcoming series between Ireland and Bangladesh.
