London: King Charles IIIwho was officially crowned this past Saturday alongside Queen Camilla, donned Saint Edward’s crown for the historic coronation ceremony.
The 74-year-old monarch was officially crowned King of the United Kingdom in Westminster Abbey.
His Majesty’s coronation would be a historic occasion, but he has been the monarch of the United Kingdom since September 2022.
The Metro reported that King Charles III was crowned St. Edward’s Crown.
Edward’s crown of solid gold – often called the centerpiece of the crown jewels – was worn by the king at the moment of coronation, the report added.
Worn by the King’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her coronation in June 1953. and by the King’s late grandfather, King George VI, during his coronation in May 1937.
The history of the crown goes back hundreds of years more – to 1661 when it was made for King Charles II.
In December 2022, St Edward’s Crown was removed from its place among the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London to undergo “alteration work” prior to the coronation.
It is surmounted by a ball and a cross, symbolizing the Christian world, and it consists of a solid gold frame set with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnets, topazes, and tourmalines.
Sky News reported that it has a velvet cover with a fur band.
And in February 2023, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the work had been completed and the tiara had returned to the Tower of London.
During coronations, the monarch will also wear the imperial state crown. One of the most famous pieces of the Crown Jewels, it is poignantly featured among the regalia placed on the late Queen’s coffin during lie-in-state and funeral proceedings.
She is also present during every official opening of Parliament. This tiara dates back to 1937 and was made by jewelers Garrard & Company for the coronation of George VI. The report added that Elizabeth II also wore it at the end of her coronation, because it is lighter to wear than the St. Edward Crown.
Queen Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary’s tiara, but it was reset with the Cullinan III, IV, and V diamonds.
