Meghalaya Director General of Police Dr L L Bishnoi said the meeting aims to ensure that there are no misunderstandings among citizens living in Meghalaya over the violent clashes in Manipur

Amid the ongoing violence in Manipur, the Meghalaya Police on Friday organized a peace meeting with community leaders and student leaders of both Kuki and Meitei communities residing in Shillong.

The meeting was organized at the Nagaland Community Hall in the Nongrim Hills, after an argument between some young men from the two communities in Shillong.

Meghalaya Director General of Police Dr L R Bishnoi said the meeting was aimed at ensuring that there are no misunderstandings among citizens living in Meghalaya over the violent clashes in Manipur.

After this peace meeting, the leaders and students of these two sects are seen “shaking hands” with each other.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Bishnoi said, “After the unfortunate and tragic incidents in Imphal and other parts of Manipur, we have decided that there should not be any misunderstandings between the citizens of both communities living in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. Therefore, we thought it prudent. As a precautionary step, invite community leaders and student leaders in both communities.”

The PSD also reported that a small scuffle occurred on Friday, but fortunately, the police immediately rushed to the scene and prevented the incident from flaring up further. A total of 16 people were arrested.

Asked about the arrests, the General Directorate of Public Security said that 16 people were arrested as precautionary detention and that after the bonds were executed, they were allowed to return because it was a minor quarrel due to a misunderstanding.

On the other hand, some 66 Meghalayan students studying in various universities and institutes in Imphal arrived in Guwahati on Friday. The Meghalaya government began evacuating students and civilians from riot-hit Manipur.

DGP Bishnoi said on Friday that the state police are in regular contact with senior police officers in Manipur.

“Today I spoke to the DGP in Manipur and they assured us that we will provide full security for the citizens. He also told me that the forces have reached there and in two days the situation will be back to normal.”

Asked about the safety of the students still staying in riot-hit Manipur, he said, “We have spoken to the Assam Rifles officials also in Manipur, and they assured us of providing security until they leave Imphal and I don’t imagine any serious problem. Once they come to Here, we have a plan to interact with them so that they don’t feel any kind of trauma afterward.”

He also reported that the police have identified six areas where people of both communities reside in Shillong and the police will carry out regular mobile patrols.

“We have identified specific areas where people from both communities reside. These include Happy Valley, Nongthymmai, Nongshilliang, Laitumkhrah, Madanrting and a few other scattered settlements. In those areas we have already drawn up a plan to reinforce the mobile patrols.

Moreover, the police has also reached out to the administrative officials of various educational institutions like NEHU where students from various northeastern states are studying.
