In Rajouri, the Army Northern Command said its personnel were conducting “relentless intelligence operations to expel a group of terrorists involved in an army truck ambush in Tota Gali district.

A terrorist was killed in Jammu and Kashmir in two separate encounters in Baramulla and Rajouri districts on Friday and Saturday night.

Kashmir police said that two or three terrorists were trapped as standoff between security forces and terrorists continued in Kunzar district of Baramulla. An official said a joint operation between the military and J&K police has begun based on the input.

In Rajouri, the Army Northern Command said its personnel were conducting “relentless intelligence operations to flush out a group of terrorists involved in an army truck ambush in Tota Gali area of ​​Bhatta Darian in Jammu district last month”.

“In the ongoing operation in Kandy forest in Rajouri sector, terrorists were contacted at 0115 hours today (Saturday) and firing started,” said Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand.

Five army personnel were killed and a major was injured on Friday in an explosion detonated by terrorists in the densely forested Kandy area of ​​Rajouri district where an operation was underway to flush out the terrorists, officials said.

“Based on specific information about the presence of terrorists in Kandy forest in Rajouri sector, a joint operation was launched on May 3. At around 7.30 am on Friday, a search team made contact with a group of terrorists holed up in a cave well,” they said.

The area is densely vegetated with rocky and steep slopes.

Officials said that additional forces from the Central Reserve Police Force and the army were brought into the area to impose a tight cordon on it so that the terrorists could not escape from the site.

They added that the forces deployed drones and sniffer dogs, and the forces hit a hideout in a cave with heavy fire from mortars and hand grenades. “The terrorists detonated an explosive device in retaliation,” it added.

On Friday morning, two soldiers belonging to the Special Forces were killed and four wounded, including the major, during the operation. Later in the day, three died in a hospital in Udhampur.

The killed soldiers are Lance Naik Rochin Singh Rawat from Gerasin in Uttarakhand, Paratrooper Siddhant Chhetri from Darjeeling in West Bengal, Naik Arvind Kumar from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, Havildar Neelam Singh from Jammu and Paratrooper Pramod Negi from Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh.
