The curfew was imposed on May 3 after violent clashes erupted between tribes and members of the majority Meitei community in Manipur, displacing thousands of people and killing more than 50 people so far.

The total curfew imposed in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, which restricted people’s movement for three hours on Sunday from 7 am to 10 am to facilitate people’s purchase of essential items such as food and medicine, has been eased, according to a notification.

“With the improvement of the law and order situation in Churachandpur district and after talks between the state government and various stakeholders, I am happy to share with you that the curfew will be partially eased as per the details shared below,” Manipur CMN Birn Singh tweeted, sharing a copy of the notice.

The curfew was partially eased on Saturday as well by two hours between 3pm-5pm.

The curfew was imposed on May 3 after violent clashes broke out between tribes and members of the majority Mete community in Manipur, displacing thousands and killing more than 50 people so far. The riots broke out Wednesday night after demonstrations and rallies organized by tribes, including Kokes and Nagas, against a proposal to grant the majority Mitte community scheduled tribal status.

Officials said on Saturday that 54 people have been killed in the clashes in the state so far. Of the 54 dead, 16 bodies were preserved in the morgue of Churachandpur district hospital while 15 bodies were in the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in the eastern district of Imphal, the news agency reported. PTI reported quoting officials.

Manipur CMN Birn Singh chaired an all-party meeting on Saturday to review the situation in the state as the Indian army and paramilitary forces work together to restore peace in areas hit by violence. He convened a meeting of all political parties to discuss the current situation in Manipur and to work collectively for peace and stability in the state. Singh was quoted as saying during the meeting that it was decided to call for peace in the state, and to encourage all citizens to avoid any actions that might lead to more violence or instability.
