The Union Ministry of Defense plans to increase women’s participation in next year’s Republic Day parade, with the defense forces opening them up to additional avenues and senior leadership roles as they prepare to take on leadership positions in recent months.
An office memo issued last month said that the Republic Day 2024 parade would have “only women participating” in bands – marches, band – tableaus and other performances during the parade in the Kartavia track.
The memorandum was issued after a debriefing meeting chaired by Defense Minister Giridar Araman in February at the Republic Day parade held on January 26 this year. The meeting was also attended by representatives from service headquarters and ministries of interior, culture and education.
The memorandum directed all participating ministries, departments, organizations and bodies to start preparing for this and to update progress on a regular basis. It has surprised the defense establishment and has been criticized from different angles.
However, sources in the government said that this would effectively mean getting maximum representation of women in the parade, since some marching bands such as the Army Infantry Band could not have women participate.
The army has not yet opened basic combat weapons such as the infantry, mechanized infantry and armored corps to women, although it has recently introduced five female officers into the Artillery Regiment, which is a combat support arm.
Female officers in the armed forces have led units and have paraded vigorously over the past few years.
The Israel Air Force’s marching band at this year’s Republic Day parade was led by Squadron Leader Sindhu Reddy, Mi-17 helicopter pilot, and the observer with the Navy’s Dornier 228 patrol aircraft, Lieutenant Commander Disha Amrith, leading the 144-sealer marine unit. .
In the show, a female officer co-leads a team of “hotheaded” motorcyclists from the Corps of Signals. The women were part of the BSF camel squad for the first time this year.
