Shubman Gill, opening batsman for the Gujarat Titans, is keen to learn from the vast experience of the ‘formidable’ Wriddhiman Saha in the ongoing IPL, as the veteran wicket-keeper has a rich style in this edition.

Saha was in scintillating form for GT as he hit a 43-ball 81 and with Gill (94 off 51) shared 142 runs in quick time for the opening wicket to give the reigning champions a comfortable 56-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants here on Sunday. Both generations looked poised to raise their IPL centuries but failed. The pair’s partnership was six meters short of the best partnership for any wicket this season for either side.

Indeed, the 142-run association between Gill and Saha was the best stand of any wicket for GT in their two-year history.

“Just to be able to share his (Saha) experience, standing next to him when he slips, it’s amazing the way he keeps going. He’s been playing since the first season of the Indian Premier League,” Gill said after the match.

“I didn’t get much to bat the first few overs but it’s important not to get carried away with what your partner is doing. I haven’t hit six in the last two matches and today I’ve scored a few, and I’m continuing to work on my skills.” GT captain Hardik Pandya said the match was balanced for a long time. “The way the game changed after that (Rashid’s catch), at one point I thought the game was even Stevens and this catch was changing. We were driving at 100 kmph as a team, but that catch caused a bump in their chase,” he points out. Rashid Khan’s stunning catch to dethrone Kyle Myers.

It was the first occasion in the IPL on Sunday that two brothers captained their team in the form of Hardik and LSG captain Kronal Pandya.

However, Kronall acknowledged that his team let the GT get away with too many runs at the plate.

“We pitched a lot of runs in the first innings. When you’re 227, you have to get hard every time. The deck played really well. It was good wickets to bat. If we’d tied it to 200-210, we’d have a chance.”
