IMD earlier indicated the formation of Cyclone Mocha over the southeastern Bay of Bengal, which is seen as the first step in a possible severe storm development in the region next week.

The Indian Meteorological Department said on Sunday that a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on May 8 and is expected to intensify into a depression and cyclonic storm on May 9.

On Saturday, the Mediterranean motion indicated a cyclonic circulation in the southeastern Bay of Bengal, seen as the first step of a possible severe cyclonic storm development in the region next week. “Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over SE BoB was located over SE BoB & southeast Andaman Sea at 0830 IST on May 7. An LPA likely formed over the same area on May 8th. It then intensified into a depression over SE BoB around May 9th. That It intensifies in a hurricane.”

The Met Office said earlier that the cyclone would be called Mocha, a name proposed by Yemen after the Red Sea coastal city known to have introduced coffee to the world more than 500 years ago, the news agency reported. PTI.

“There is a cyclonic circulation over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and its vicinity in the lower and middle troposphere. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same area by May 8,” said Mr. Mrutunjay Mohapatra, Director-General, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Mohapatra said details about the cyclone’s path and intensification will be provided after the Low Pressure Area (LPA) is formed. According to him, the weather system is likely to concentrate in a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 9 and intensify into a cyclonic storm and move north towards the center of the Bay of Bengal.

Hunters are on alert for five days

IMD has warned fishermen of bad weather over the next five days, in the southeast Bay of Bengal with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph as of Sunday.

“Those over the southeastern Bay of Bengal are advised to return to safer places before May 7, and those over the central Bay of Bengal are advised to return before May 9,” the IMD said in its warning issued until May 10.

It also suggested that tourism and marine activities as well as shipping be regulated near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 8 and 12.
