Musk’s forced changes to Twitter from cutting staff to getting rid of free verification check tags that are seen as authoritative stamps have alienated users and advertisers.
CEO Elon Musk said that Twitter has been purging accounts that have not had activity for several years.
Elon Musk announced on Monday that Twitter is canceling accounts that have not been used for a long time.
The move comes as Musk tries to increase participation, and money-making opportunities, on the online platform he bought for $44 billion last year.
“We’re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you’ll likely see a drop in follower count,” Musk said in a tweet.

Musk’s forced changes to Twitter from cutting staff to getting rid of free verification check tags that are seen as authoritative stamps have alienated users and advertisers.
Twitter’s blue hashtags were reinstated on some media, celebrities, and other high-profile accounts in late April — a move that many recipients protested.
Musk tweeted at the time that he was “paying some (contributions) personally.”
Several official media accounts have reclaimed the flag, including AFP, which did not subscribe to Twitter Blue.
The repositioned ticks again did not attract US public broadcaster NPR, which in mid-April suspended activity on its accounts.
The broadcaster was among those protesting Twitter’s “state-owned” and “government-funded” designations, which were previously reserved for non-independent media funded by authoritarian governments.
Since Musk bought Twitter, the company has relaxed content moderation on the network, which has allowed many users banned for hate messages or spreading misinformation.
Market trackers say Twitter revenue has plummeted as advertisers shun the platform.
