Relations between India and Israel have seen a revival in the past few years in a range of sectors including defence, agriculture and water management
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen begins a three-day visit to India on Tuesday to explore ways to expand bilateral ties and pave the way for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip to New Delhi this year.
Diplomatic sources said Cohen will hold wide-ranging talks with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar, covering the full range of engagement between the two countries, including in the areas of strategic affairs and trade.
The visiting Israeli foreign minister will attend the India-Israel Business Forum organized by CII Chamber of Industry on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to visit Mumbai.
This is the third high-level visit by senior Israeli officials in less than three months, and it comes in quick succession following the visit of Knesset (Israeli parliament) Speaker Amir Ohana at the end of March and early April as well as Economy Minister Nir Barkat’s recent visit to India. Month.
Cohen will be accompanied by a delegation of businessmen.
The sources said his visit is also set to pave the way for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s trip to India later this year.
In January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Netanyahu to visit India at an early date.
His visit to India in 2019 during his previous tenure as Prime Minister was canceled due to scheduling issues. The two sides were working on a plan for his visit to India in 2021, but that did not materialize after his ouster from power in June of that year.
Netanyahu returned as prime minister in December after his Likud party formed a coalition with some other parties after the elections.
